When fishing with Bob’s South Padre Fishing on the beautiful South Padre Island, you’ll have the chance to reel in some exciting and diverse fish species. Here are the top fish you can target during your fishing adventure:
These handsome fish are year-round residents in the waters surrounding South Padre Island. Known for their bronze to copper color, redfish are remarkably strong and can crush your bait. Larger redfish (over 30 inches), often called “bull reds,” head to deeper nearshore areas most of the year. During fall, they flood into inshore waters for spawning, creating an excellent opportunity to catch trophy-sized fish.
Speckled trout (Cynoscion nebulosus) thrive in the flats, channels, and shallow waters around South Padre Island. These fish provide exciting action and are prized for their delicious taste.
Flounder can be found from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Maine. In the warm, sheltered waters of the lower Laguna Madre, flounder hunt for food before heading to deeper waters to spawn. Their round body, round fins, and left-sided eyes help them blend in with the bottom and ambush prey. Flounder gigging (using specially made multi-prong spears) is a unique night fishing experience.
Snook (Centropomus undecimalis) are another popular inshore species. They offer thrilling fights and are known for their acrobatics when hooked. Catching snook requires skill and finesse, making them a favorite among anglers.
Black drum (Pogonias cromis) inhabit the same waters as redfish and provide a similar fight.
Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are powerful and acrobatic fish. Hooking a tarpon is an adrenaline-pumping experience, and they are often referred to as the "silver kings" of the sea.
Kingfish (Scomberomorus cavalla) are offshore species that can be targeted during deep-sea fishing adventures. They are fast swimmers and put up a strong fight when hooked.
